When is the World Cup third place play-off match, and what TV channel is the match on?

THE third best team at Russia 2018 will be decided 24 hours before the actual World Cup final.

Many football fans view the third place play-off as a bit of a downer as no one really remembers the game or who actually contested it.

It comprises two teams who literally have to pick themselves up off the floor after failing to make the final and often fielding a second string to pacify underused squad members.

But this fixture is a traditional one and Fifa wouldn’t have it any other way.

In 2014 Holland, who failed to qualify this time, beat hosts Brazil 3-1 in Brasilia.

And four years earlier in South Africa Germany thanked Sami Khedira for his winner in the 3-2 triumph over Uruguay.

England were contestants in 1990 when Bobby Robson’s team lost 2-1 to hosts Italy in Bari.

When and where is the third place play-off?

The 2018 World Cup third place-play-off will be held in St Petersburg at 3pm on Saturday, July 14.

The 65,000 capacity Saint Petersburg Stadium will host the match – one of the most expensive stadiums ever built.

What TV channel is it on?

This will decided closer to the time – but will be on free-to-air TV.
