Retired former Barcelona and France defender Eric Abidal has been released from hospital, six weeks after a liver transplant.

Abidal was told he needed the operation earlier this year, almost 12 months after surgery to remove a tumour.

The player's cousin supplied the donor organ and Abidal went through the procedure last month.

Barcelona's medical services released a statement, saying: 'Given the particulars of his recovery process, Abidal will have to undergo a number of hospital check-ups.'

Abidal missed just a few weeks of football after his first operation last year but he has been forced to hang up his boots since his transplant.
