Terminally-ill 42 stone man forced to lie in hospital bed because he is ‘too large’ to go home and die with loved ones
His devastated family's appeals for the authorities to specially adapt their home have been ignored
A TERMINALLY ill 42 stone man can’t go home to die – because his house is too small.
Cancer sufferer Paul Humphrey, 37, has been in hospital for 30 weeks suffering from penile cancer.
But health officials won’t let him go home because the property in Grimsby, Lincs, can’t accommodate his extra large bed and all the equipment he needs.
His mother Linda Humphrey has had a plea for alterations to be made turned down by their landlord, reports the Grimsby Telegraph.
Paul said: “My bed is quite wide and needs to have a lot of room.”
When Paul first went into hospital he was over 45 stone and has already lost his testicles to the disease.
When he was first admitted to hospital, he weighed over 45 stone, he now weighs just over 42.
His mother added: “I just want my boy home before he dies. I do not know how long he has got but what time there is, is precious.
“We had hoped to have him home for Christmas so that we could all be together one final time.
“I don’t want him to die in hospital. All I want is for my son to die in peace at home.
“It is an instinctive thing for a mum to want to be by her son. I want him to be home. I am heartbroken. It is hard enough knowing you will lose your son but knowing you can’t have him home is awful. I need precious time with him. I can only go up to the hospital for a couple of hours.”
She is now appealing for specialised accommodation to be provided.
Due to his weight Paul gradually lost his mobility and after suffering an infection in his leg last August he was diagnosed with penile cancer.
In October last year his family were given the devastating news that there was nothing more that could be done for him.
A spokesman for Home Choice in Lincolnshire, said: “We have placed them on top of our housing list.
“But it is dependent on what suitable properties become available.”
