Police are hunting a knifeman after a student was stabbed outside a university campus.

The student, in his 20s, was attacked by the University of East London's Docklands site, near London City Airport at around 9pm yesterday.

It is not known how the clash erupted, but it is believed to have involved a member of the public not linked to the university.

Witnesses say he was seen fleeing the scene and running towards Gallions Reach DLR station.

The student was taken to hospital by paramedics but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

UEL's Docklands riverside campus holds up to 1,200 students and includes halls of residence, lecture theatre, library and a £21million sports centre.

Journalism student Aurora Krogh, 21, said the scene was chaotic after the attack last night with terrified students unaware of what was going on.

She explained that the identity of the victim was still unknown but rumours had been circulating that he was a Pakistani student.

She said: 'It was kinda scary cause we didn't know what was going on and it seemed to be a bit of a chaos.

'First we thought it was just something drug related but when the police cars kept coming we realized it was a bigger deal.'

She added that it 'seemed' the person involved in the attack 'wasn't a student'.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: 'Police were called to University Way, E16, at approximately 9pm on 14 February to reports of a stabbing.

'London Ambulance Service was called to the scene. A man in his 20s was found with stab wounds.

'He is at an east London hospital. There have been no arrests.
