Liam Smith apologises for failing to make weight for interim world title clash with Liam Williams

Liam Smith has apologised to his fans after coming in heavy for his clash with fellow countryman Liam Williams.

Smith was a pound over the 11-stone light-middleweight limit and cannot now win the WBO interim world title.

Williams came in almost two pounds under the limit and can win the strap in Leeds on Saturday night.

Smith said: "Firstly I would like to apologise to all my team and to Team Williams, to Frank Warren and to the WBO.

"After a good training camp I misjudged the weight and couldn't do more this morning. It's been a long time - seven months - since I made the championship weight, no excused though, I f***** up."

Smith claimed he was told he had one hour to lose the extra weight but declined, only to be told he actually had two hours - but by that time it was too late.

He added: "This is the first time I have missed weight in eight years and like I said, I apologise. The fight still goes ahead and believe me, the punishment in not being able to win the belt is hurting enough, trust me."
