Recovering alcoholic Paul Danan was close to relapse in CBB house as he watched his housemates hit the booze

CBB’s Paul Danan says he felt he was on the verge of relapse while inside the Celebrity Big Brother house.

The troubled actor was the second housemate to be evicted last Friday. As a recovering alcohol, painkiller and cocaine addict, he says he found it very challenging to watch the other housemates enjoy a drink while he couldn’t.

“My recovery was so tested. Imagine you’re sitting there and everyone is drinking and you’re not,” he said in an interview with the Daily Star .

“I was worried. It’s not easy in there. It is hard if you have addictive tendencies. For me it’s been a really tough journey. I’ve not found it easy to stay in recovery all the time.”

Producers became so concerned that they relaxed their ban on books, allowing Paul to read a self-help manual to stay on track.

He said: “I have a daily reflection book called Just For Today and I was able to read once a day. It gave me strength and allowed me to remember I was staying clean and sober.”

Paul added that some of his housemates “changed” when they had a drink.

The former Hollyoaks actor had been battling cocaine addiction since 2006. But despite successfully kicking the habit, he then developed a separate painkiller addiction after a motorbike accident in 2010.

He’s been sober since 2012, and is now father to a two-year-old son named DeNiro. Although he confesses he still wishes he could have a drink, Paul actually credits Big Brother with changing his life.
