Donald Trump acted like ‘drunk tourist’ during his first overseas trip as president, says senior staff member

Donald Trump has been accused by a senior member of his foreign office of behaving like a “drunk tourist”, not a statesman.

The criticism comes after Mr Trump caused offence last week on his first official overseas trip as American President.

His lapses included barging Montenegro’s Prime Minister Dusko Markovic out of the way to get to the front as leaders prepared to pose for a photo at a NATO summit in Brussels.

The dismayed US State Department official said: “When it comes to diplomacy, President Trump is a drunk tourist.

“Loud and tacky, shoving his way around the dance floor. He steps on others without realising it. It’s ineffectual.”

During the tour Mr Trump signed a controversial arms deal with Saudi Arabia.

The President also attended the G7 summit in Italy and refused to back the Paris Agreement aimed at combating climate change. The State Department official said Mr Trump’s “arrogance” in threatening to oppose the deal was “an abdication” of US leadership.
